Kyiv court announces pre-trial measure of restraint for Petro Poroshenko

On January 19, Kyiv’s Pechersky court decided against taking Petro Poroshenko, a former President of Ukraine and one of the current opposition leaders, into custody, the newspaper Ukrainska Pravda reports.

The measure of restraint in the form of a duty to appear in court, before investigators and prosecutors was imposed on Poroshenko. In addition, the politician has to hand in his foreign passport for the duration of the investigation. The measure is valid for two months, it expires on March 19.

In December 2021, the State Bureau of Investigation reported that Petro Poroshenko was suspected of treason as well as aiding and abetting terrorist organisations; they referred to coal supplies amounting to $55 mln from the territories not controlled by Kyiv in the years of 2014-2015. If found guilty of committing the crime, the former Ukrainian leader may face up to 15 years of imprisonment.

On 17 December 2021, the Ukrainian authorities attempted to to hand over a written notice of suspicion to Poroshenko, but he left the country.

A month later, Petro Poroshenko decided to return to Ukraine. Thousands of supporters met him at the airport. Security officers did not detain him there; the politician headed to the court.
