Referendum over: Russia to take Crimea under its wing

According to the results of Sunday’s referendum, 95.7% voted for Crimea’s joining Russia. But only Moscow and Pyongyang have recognised its legitimacy.

The voters’ turnout reached 83%, the Crimean authorities report. The referendum was being held under the surveillance of Russian militants who had occupied the peninsula.

In Sevastopol pro-Russian citizens were waiting for the results in the central square. Most of them had started celebrating the victory before the results were announced.
