French envoy Nicolas de Lacoste leaves Belarus on back of authorities’ demand

On October 17, France’s Ambassador to Belarus Nicolas de Lacoste left Belarus.

Last week, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry demanded that the ambassador leave before October 18, the BBC reports with reference to AFP.

In turn, Belarusian Ambassador Ihar Fyasenka came back to Minsk from Paris. Apparently, the Belarusian authorities resorted to such a move after the French diplomat’s refusal to present his credential to Alyaksandr Lukashenka.

Pavel Latushka, a Belarusian emigre politician and former diplomat, expressed his solidarity the French ambassador and thanked him for the support of the democratic forces of Belarus.

In fact, the regime has launched a diplomatic war against France,” he said.

As reported earlier, during a meeting with Belarusian opposition leader Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya in mid September, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said that France would back the imposition of new sanctions on the Lukashenka regime and continue to support the civil society of Belarus.
