Journalists detained in Mahiliou arrested for 20 days


In Mahiliou, the journalists and the head of the regional office of the United Civil Party were sentenced on the third day of their detention.

Journalists Alyaksandr Burakou and Uladzimir Laptsevich, and Uladzimir Shantsau, head of the regional office of the United Civil Party, were tried for “unauthorized action.” The journalists were detained on May 12th, during the trial of Pavel Seviarynets and activists of “European Belarus” near the Mahiliou regional court building. The trial was closed, and the people who came to support political prisoners stayed outside.

The police told people to leave the court building as it could be considered an unauthorized mass event. Soon riot police arrived at the courthouse, and detentions began.

The police came for Uladzimir Shantsau, chairman of the regional office of the United Civic Party, the next day. He was detained for “unauthorized action.”

As a result, journalists Alyaksandr Burakou, who cooperate with Deutsche Welle, and Uladzimir Laptsevich were sentenced to 20 and 15 days of arrest.
