‘We will not accept repression in Belarus’: France’s FM Le Drian meets with Tsikhanouskaya

On September 15, Belarusian opposition leader Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian in Paris.

“The conversation falls within the framework of France’s regular contacts with Ms. Tsikhanouskaya since the start of the political crisis in Belarus, as well as with all components of Belarusian civil society,” the ministry’s press service reported.

During the meeting, the Belarusian politician put a special emphasis on the inadmissibility of so-called trading political prisoners; according to her, all people who were jailed for political reasons in Belarus should be released and rehabilitated. She believes that Europe should stick with the diplomatic isolation of the regime and help the Belarusian society, Tsikhanouskaya’s team says.

In turn, minister Le Drian said France would back the imposition of new sanctions on the Lukashenka regime and continue to support the civil society of Belarus.

We will not accept either the repression in Belarus or acts of destabilization against our European partners,” he said on Twitter on the back of the talks.
