In connection with the detention of Yury Zyankovich, who has the U.S. and Belarusian citizenship, the U.S. embassy stressed that they are always ready to provide consular services in case of the detention of an American citizen, reports TUT.BY.

Diplomats did not comment on the detention of an American citizen by the Belarusian secret services, nor did they say whether the consul at the KGB jail has already visited Zyankovich.

“One of the most important tasks of the Department of State and U.S. embassies and consulates is to assist U.S. citizens imprisoned or detained abroad. Under current practice, we do not share information about U.S. citizens without their written consent,” said Tim O’Connor, press attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Belarus.

According to his wife, Alena Dzyanisavets, Yury Zyankovich was literally kidnapped from a Russian hotel. On April 13, the KGB reported the detention of Ryhor Kastusiou and Alyaksandr Fyaduta on “suspicion of committing a crime.” Fyaduta, like Zyankovich, was detained in Moscow.
