Officers of the Lutsk border detachment are trying to shut the door on the illegal import of Belarusian excise-free cigarettes from Poland to Ukraine, the country’s State Border Service reports.
The border guards were informed that tobacco products would have been transported by two trucks under the guise of other goods through the Yagodin-Auto checkpoint.
On June 14, one of the trucks headed to Ukraine. In accordance with shipping documents, it was carrying ceramic tiles. But in fact, there were cigarettes in the vehicle. The truck was escorted to Lutsk.
Meanwhile, Lithuania plans to tighten control of state borders to prevent the smuggling of contraband cigarettes from Belarus. According to Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Defense Laurynas Kasčiūnas, cigarette smuggling is ‘a Belarusian state policy’.
In early May, Polish customs officers confiscated another large batch of illicit cigarettes from Belarus. It was worth of $2.5 mln.
