On March 15, Belarus celebrates Constitution Day. On this day, constitutional amendments adopted at the republican referendum also come into force.
The so-called referendum on amendments and additions to the Constitution was held on February 27. The CEC believes the voting oficially took place and reports that 4,440,813 citizens, or 82.86%, voted in favor of adopting the amendments to the Constitution.
Before the election, the opposition forces called on citizens to put crosses next to each answer and spoil their ballots. But the CEC did not say how many ballots were declared invalid or spoiled. An independent vote count has not yet been announced.
Western countries believe that the constitutional referendum in Belarus was held in conditions of widespread human rights violations and violent repression of all segments of Belarusian society.
