Lithuania eager to stop transit of goods from Belarus

Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and Communications has prepared a draft law to ban imports of products from Belarus. Transit of goods from Belarus will also fall under the sanctions, reports TASS citing the Lithuanian news agency BNS.

On December 10, the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Lithuania registered a bill that proposes the government and the Seimas to impose sanctions on products imported from Belarus.

“Transactions that were concluded before the introduction of sanctions in Lithuania should immediately be terminated unilaterally or by agreement of the parties, or their implementation should be stopped for the duration of the sanctions. Transactions, the implementation of which would contradict the sanctions in force in Lithuania, are prohibited,” says the explanatory note to the bill.

Lithuania is still affected by a scandal, caused by an advance payment from Belaruskali to the Lithuanian railroad for the transportation of fertilizers in December and partially in January – after the U.S. sanctions were imposed. The Minister of Communications and Transport of Lithuania, Marius Skuodis, said last Thursday that he was ready to take responsibility for the transit of Belaruskal fertilizers, which continue to be transferred through Lithuania and to resign from his post. Last Friday, Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis also sent his resignation to the prime minister.
