Lawyer Ilya Salei has left Belarus. He is now in Warsaw. He posted a photo on his Instagram and wrote that this decision was “the most difficult one I have made in private in the last year.”

“In connection with the verdict against Viktar Dzmitryievich Babaryka and the referral of the case of Masha Kalesnikava and Maksim Znak, in which I was detained in September 2020 and remain a defendant to date, as well as taking into account other events, I have taken the forced decision to temporarily leave Belarus,” said Ilya Salei.

He added that he retained “his independent status of a lawyer.”

Since September 9, Ilya Salei, a lawyer at the Viktar Babaryka’s headquarters, remained in his apartment without the right to communicate and walk around. Ilya could only meet with his lawyer, who brought him groceries and took out the garbage.

On April, 16 his measure of restraint was changed from house arrest to bail. He remained in the defendant’s status under Article 361 of the Criminal Code and was obliged to appear when summoned by the investigating authorities and the court.
