Journalist Iryna Slaunikava to face trial on June 23


The date of journalist Iryna Slaunikava’s trial is now available. It is to start at 10 am on June 23 in the Homiel Regional Court.

Iryna Slaunikava is accused, among other things, of “leading an extremist formation.” The journalist is charged under two articles of the Criminal Code at once:

  • Article 342 of the Criminal Code – organization and preparation of actions that grossly violate public order or active participation in them
  • Article 361-1 of the Criminal Code – the creation of an extremist formation, or participation in it

    The former employee of Belsat, and now a full-time employee of the Polish Television (TVP), has been recognized as a political prisoner.

Iryna Slaunikava was detained at the end of October 2021 at the National Airport after returning to Minsk from a vacation in Egypt with her husband. The couple was initially sentenced to 15 days in jail for “posting extremist content” on Facebook. It was about the materials of Belsat from the period when the channel had not yet been recognized as extremist.

In total, Iryna Slaunikava faces up to 7 years in prison.
