Photojournalist Tatsyana Kapitonava gets 10-day jail term

On May 13. freelance photographer Tatsyana Kapitonava was detained at Startup Family coworking in Minsk.

She was filming the Emerge conference, when policemen appeared at the venue. According to eyewitnesses, the goal of their visit was detaining the journalist.

The woman was taken to Savetski district police department; an protocol was drawn upon her under Article 24.23 of the Code of Administrative Offences. She had to await the trial in the notorious detention centre on Akrestsin Street.

Her case was heard in Savetski district court on FridayAccording to the authorities’ version, Tatsyana took part in ‘the unauthorised mass event’ which was held not far from Kamarouski Market on Wednesday; in the course of it, the women dressed in white were marching, forming a human chain and laying flowers. In court, the photo reporter confirmed that she had been there, but denied her participation in the protest rally.

However, judge Alena Zhukovich took no notice of the defendant’s words and sentenced her to 10 days of administrative arrest.
