Imprisoned politician Ryhor Kastusiou has cancer, doctor confirms

Ryhor Kastusiou’s doctor recently told about the diagnosis to the politician’s daughter Kastyaryna, reports Nasha Niva.

The health of the BPF Party leader Ryhor Kastusiou, who has been kept behind bars for seven months, deteriorated in autumn. The doctors suspected cancer. In addition, Kastusiou became sick with COVID and had a heart attack behind bars.

The politician was transferred from the KGB jail to the prison hospital of the detention center in Valadarski street. The relatives had no information about the biopsy results for a long time. Eventually, Ryhor’s daughter Katysaryna spoke with the doctor.

“I went to the doctor and, though in words only, he confirmed the diagnosis to me. My father has prostate cancer. After that, on the one hand, we became more anxious: I really want my loved one to overcome the disease. But at least now there is some certainty, and we can move from point A to point B, to take some measures,” she said.

Treatment will be assigned based on the results of further examinations.

Ryhor’s confinement term was extended for another two months — until February 2022. Petitions to change the measure of restraint to house arrest for health reasons have been left unanswered.

The 64-year-old Kastusiou was detained on 12 April at the same time as the lawyer Yury Zyankovich and the literary scholar Alyaksandr Fyaduta. They are suspects in a criminal case of “power seizure” and attempted assassination of Alyaksandr Lukashenka. Kastusiou denies any involvement in the “attempt.”
