Salute for Mikalai Statkevich

On the second anniversary of the 2010 presidential elections and crackdown on mass protests a salute was fired at Mahiliou prison No 4 where ex-presidential candidate Mikalai Statkevich is kept.
In such a way civil activists and non-indifferent people expressed their support to Statkevich who had been behind bars for two years.
Mikalai Statkevich was adjudged guilty of mass riot organization on December, 19, 2010. On May 26, 2012 the court sentenced him to six-year imprisonment in a maximum security penal colony.
Statkevich has still not filed a petition for pardon addressed to president Aliaksandr Lukashenka, and according to his wife Maryna Adamovich, this is the reason for tough measures being taken towards him. In January 2012, Statkevich was transferred from the penal colony to a closed prison where conditions of confinement are much more severe. Such verdict was attained in the session of court which took place in the colony of Shklou on January 12, 2012.
In December 2011 Statkevich was sent to a punitive confinement due to a ridiculous mistake in the list of his personal effects: the politician qualified nose-wipers as “hygiene products”. There three warnings were issued for him not having a prisoner’s tag. After leaving the confinement Statkevich was placed in a close ward being accused of fight provoking. On the basis of these events a special commission gathered to define what measures should be taken.
