Lithuanian military is now also guarding the border with Belarus. It has to do with the massive traffic of illegal migrants to the European Union, coming from Belarus to Lithuania, stated the Head of the State Border Control Service at the Lithuanian Interior Ministry, General Rustamas Liubaevas, on the air of the Lithuanian national radio LRT.

“We are increasing the forces and resources for border protection. Starting from today, the border guards are assisted by the military in patrolling,” he said. According to the head of the agency, the Border Guard Service staff number, in turn, will increase the number of its employees directly at the border. It will also use the assistance of other agencies.

Plus 31 migrants in a day

According to the information of the Department of State Border Security of Lithuania, 31 migrants illegally tried to cross the Lithuanian-Belarusian border on Friday night.

“This is the fourth day in a row when Lithuanians have detained less than 100 migrants per day on the border with Belarus. And on July 10, their number per day was the lowest since the beginning of the month. “A total of 1,577 migrants, crossing the border illegally, have already been detained on the border with Belarus in 2021,” said the security agency.

Earlier, the Government of Lithuania declared a state of emergency because of the sharp increase in illegal migration and accused the official Minsk of inaction and unwillingness to investigate the facts of illegal migrants coming from Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries.

A serious increase in illegal migration was also recorded on the Polish-Belarusian border, where Polish border guards detained two large groups of migrants and 40 and 49 people during the week.
