European Parliament to discuss independent media in Belarus

According to the press service of the European Parliament, the discussion will take place on Monday, July 12, within the platform’s framework to combat impunity in Belarus.

This will be the second meeting of the platform to combat impunity in Belarus, created in the European Parliament. The independent press and possible measures to support journalists in the light of massive political repression in Belarus will be discussed.

Among the meeting participants was the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression Irene Khan, OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Teresa Ribeiro, and one of the heads of the human rights organization Reporters Without Borders, Antoine Bernard.

On July 8-9th, a wave of arrests of independent journalists and searches in their apartments and the editorial offices of the non-state mass media took place in Belarus. The KGB called the law enforcers’ actions “a large-scale purge operation against radicals.”
