10th protest Sunday in row: Thousands of participants in Minsk (photos)

At a rough estimate, about 100,000 people might have taken part in Sunday’s March of Honour in Minsk.

To prevent the columns of protesters from getting united, siloviki resorted to excessive force: they were grabbing and battering even passers-by, not only participants in the rally. They started detaining people shortly before the start of the march; water cannons, tear gas and flashbang grenades were used against demonstrators. Moreover, rubber and paintball bullets were fired at a number of protesters.

As of 10 pm (local time), over 408 persons, including at least 40 journalists, have been detained throughout Belarus, human rights centre Viasna reports. Some of them have been released; the list of detainees is being updated.
