At the beginning of 2021, 9,349,645 people lived in Belarus. This is 60,614 fewer than at the beginning of 2020, according to the Belstat agency.

From 2019 to 2020, the country’s population decreased by 18,998 people. At the beginning of 2019, 9,429,257 people lived in Belarus, while at the beginning of 2020, there were 9,410,259, and at the beginning of 2021 — 9,349,645. It means that during the last year, the population decreased by three times more than the year before.

It is not known for certain what caused such a decrease in population, as Belstat has not yet published data on mortality. Perhaps, the population decline was influenced by the increase in mortality, the fall of the birth rate and the additional migration outflow. It is also necessary to take into account that it was last year that the COVID-19 pandemic started.
