Lithuania to seek deployment of permanent U.S. contingent

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda says his country will seek the deployment of a U.S. military contingent permanently.

According to Gitanas Nauseda, this should be a deterrent to Russia and should strengthen the security of Lithuania and the entire region, Reuters reported.

“Of course, we will talk to the U.S. to make sure that U.S. rotational troops will remain in Lithuania permanently,” President Nauseda said at a recent news conference.

The NATO International Battle Group has been deployed to Lithuania since 2017. About 500 U.S. troops were stationed there in 2019, and an additional 350 German troops are due to arrive soon in response to Russian threats to Ukraine.
