All Belarusian banks connected to Russian analogue of SWIFT

All Belarusian banks have joined the Russian Central Bank’s Financial Messaging System, Denis Baryshkov, Head of the national payment system department of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, said during the 8th National Payment Forum.

“To date, all Belarusian banks are connected to the Financial Messaging System,” the agency Prime quotes Baryshkov.

The Russian authorities commissioned the establishment of the above mentioned system in fear of Russia’s being disconnected from the SWIFT interbank payment system.

As reported earlier, US President Joe Biden announced that hefty sanctions would be imposed on Russia and Putin’s entourage if the Kremlin dared to attack Ukraine or carry out any other hostile actions against it; the option of cutting Russia off SWIFT is also being considered. As far as Belarus is concerned, experts warn that our country might take a hit even if it fails to be involved in aggressive acts against Ukraine.
