World War II veterans in photo project

“Map of Memory” is a photo project of Alyaksandr Vasyukovich, which in 2014 was inspired by his grandfather, veteran, and participant of the Great Patriotic War Vasil Fedarovich. During the May holidays, the family was not preparing for the parade but planted potatoes. This tradition was also, to some extent, the reason for the creation of the project.

“Our whole family would come to grandfather’s house to help him. The collective farm horse was free only on holidays, so grandfather did not celebrate, but worked, there was no other time,” says the photographer.

During his life, Vasil Fedarovich did not receive a single invitation to the parade in Minsk, and he died without being present at a celebration in his honor. His grandson calls it an awful injustice.

“Seeing how Minsk was preparing for the holiday, how they were tidying up around the monument to war veterans in my grandfather’s village, I realized that all these attributes were more important to the state than the people who fought for that victory. My series is a tribute to all veterans and a reminder that people are more important than monuments and paraphernalia,” says Alyaksandr Vasyukovich.
