Belarusians eager to buy foreign currency

People have been actively buying foreign currency in the domestic fx market of Belarus for 16 months in a row. This is evidenced by data from the National Bank.

Since December 2019, Belarusians have purchased $2.239 billion from banks on a net basis. For the first quarter of 2021, the net purchase of foreign currency by individuals totalled $225.9 million.

Resident legal entities purchased $196.5 million from banks in the first quarter.

Together, resident enterprises and individuals remain net buyers of foreign currency in 2021. In Q1 the balance of buying amounted to $422.4 mln.
