German Federal Prosecutor's Office launches investigation into Russian war crimes in Ukraine

Germany’s Prosecutor-General at the Supreme Court of Germany, Peter Frank, has opened a so-called “structural investigation.” According to the DPA news agency, the federal prosecutor’s office has specific data pointing to war crimes already committed in Ukraine.

The German prosecutor’s office has also expressed fears that the number of Russian war crimes will grow. According to Der Spiegel weekly, there are reports of the use of cluster bombs, strikes on residential areas and civil infrastructure, gas pipelines, nuclear waste storage facilities, and thermal power plants. In addition, evidence of so-called “target lists” allegedly drawn up by Russian and Chechen units will come under the spotlight. By “targets” are meant people to be killed. According to some reports, these lists include high-ranking Ukrainian politicians.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he became aware that he was “target number one” on these lists.

According to the international criminal code, the German federal prosecutor can investigate war crimes and crimes against humanity worldwide.
