Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya urged international community to support Coordinating Council

Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Svetlana Alexievich and 55 other members of the Steering Committee have sent a letter to international organizations and institutions, including the UN, OSCE, the European Parliament, the US Department of State and the Council of Europe, urging them to support the Coordinating Council.

Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya together with 55 members of the Coordinating Council has appealed to international leaders to support the Coordinating Council.

Context

“Since its establishment, the Coordinating Council members have been subjected to pressure and repression, many of its leaders are in prison or are forced to be away from Belarus, which means they cannot vote when decisions are made. And in recent weeks, the regime has begun introducing new “laws” to justify the mass repression. Authorities open criminal cases against the Coordinating Council members, accusing them of extremism and terrorism.

This has nothing to do with the work we do. All we want is a peaceful resolution to the political crisis in Belarus. This is what the Belarusians voted for in the August 9 presidential elections. And that is what more than 760,000 Belarusians voted for on the Golos platform.

That is why I, Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the leader elected by the people of Belarus, appeal to the international community to support the Coordinating Council. I created the Coordinating Council for the sake of peaceful negotiations, and all this time it has been operating exclusively within the legal framework. So I insist that the repression against its members must stop completely,” reads the statement of Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya.
