Minsk police detain BSU alumna who thanked political prisoner, fired professors at graduation ceremony


Katsyaryna Vinnikava, a freshly minted alumna of the Belarusian State University’s Law School who made a powerful speech at the graduation ceremony, has been detained by security forces, Telegram channel Students’ Thought reports.

The dormitory room she was resided in was searched; her laptop was confiscated. On Thursday evening, Katsyaryna was being interrogated in the police department for several hours, her lawyer was not allowed to see her.

A bit later, she managed to call his friends and tell them that a protocol was being drawn upon her. At 10:22 pm the press service of the Minsk police said on Telegram that the girl came to the police department as a ‘check’ was being conducted; no further details were provided.

As reported earlier, Katsyaryna Vinnikava publicly thanked political prisoner and prominent Belarusian lawyer Maksim Znak as well as the fired lecturers during the diploma delivery ceremony at BSU’s Law Faculty on June, 29.

Katsyaryna‘s speech brought the audience to their feet, and the video of the graduation ceremony immediately went viral on the Belarusian segment of the Internet, which might have caused the authorities’ outrage.
