Girls in white, riot police: Belarusian day-to-day realities in Vilnius (photos)


‘We will be free! The performance action under such slogan took place in the Lithuanian capital city.

Staging the art event, its authors and participants were seeking to recapture the atmosphere reigning in the present-day Belarus and show its true colours to the residents of the neighbouring country.

The girls dressed in white approached the local office of the European Commission and started singing the Belarusian folk song Kupalinka. At that moment, ‘riot policemen’ with truncheons came out of the blue, attacked them and then took the singers to the improvised prison truck. The viewers and passers-by were appalled; some of them even burst into tears.
