Political scientist Dzmitry Balkunets has urgently left Russia in the wake of the Belarusian authorities’ opening a criminal case against him.

The Belarusian-born expert, who was a permanent resident of Russia until recently, often comments on the situation in Belarus to media outlets; he also keeps his own video blog.

Balkunets informs on Telegram that he had to move to a safer place due to grave risk of ‘violence and physical attack’ by Belarusian special services. Being out of reach for long, he had to completely change his plans for security reasons, Balkunets noted.

“Seething with anger over my activity, Lukashenka’s fascist regime resorted to their favourite methods of intimidation. The ‘leader’ has proved to be a weakling. He is not able to perceive the truth,” the expert believes.

As reported earlier, the Belarusian Prosecutor General’s Office started criminal prosecution of a Dzmitry Balkunets for ‘publicly insulting President’.
