‘Shame!’ Brest authorities after unsafe plant protesters (video)

The Belarusian authorities keep detaining the participants in protests against the construction of the iPower battery factory in Brest.

As reported earlier, blogger Syarhei Pyatrukhin and activist Kanstantsin Astapuk were detained, jailed and fined. After that, Astapuk was detained again last Friday; now he is in the detention centre in Brest.

On October 7, before the start of another protest rally in the central square of Brest the police detained Zmitser Andrasyuk and another activist, his name is Andrey. About 45 people showed up at the protest after which Yuliya Zubik, Tatsyana Fesikava and Uladzimir Maroz were taken by the police. When the two women were convoyed to the police car, the protesters were chanting ‘Shame!’

“The detainees are being kept in the Leninski district police department. The authorities will definitely do everything to prevent the residents from in Lenin Square, that is why they started to arrest the most active opponents of the construction of the battery factory,” local human rights activist Raman Kislyak told Belsat TV.

The Chinese company is building the battery plant which will produce lead-acid batteries at a rapid pace. Its work may cause severe damage to human health due to lead emissions within a radius of 30 kilometers. Lead dust from production may provoke many serious diseases, including cancer.
