The Minsk police have brutally detained former political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich and seven activists who came to support the leaders of the REP independent trade union Henadz Fyadynich and Ihar Komlik.

Fyadynich and Komlik were found guilty of large scale tax evasion (Art. 243-2 of the Criminal Code of Belarus) on August, 24. Maryna Fyodarava, a judge at Savetski district court of Minsk, has sentenced them to 4 years of restraint of liberty without sending them to a correctional institution.

After delivering the sentence, a number of activists unfurled a white-red-white flags near the courthouse. Politician Mikalai Statkevich called for protesting at the building of the presidential administration.

“Today, 70 people have been near the administration of demanding to stop the persecution of the REP. Trade union. One thousand citizens should appear there before considering the cassational appeal against the judgment,” Statkevich said.

A bit later, a red bus drove up; riot policemen got out and grabbed at least 6 activists (Leanid Kulakou, Maya Naumava, Volha Nikalaichyk, Uladzimir Neumyarzhytski, Pavel Mrochka and Alyaksandr Chmykhau). Then plainclothes people detained Mikalai Statkevich and Maksim Vinyarski. All the detainees were taken to Maskouski district police department.
