Belarusian leader wants state-sponsored media to win over Internet

President Alyaksandr Lukashenka hopes that Belarusian state-run media advance to the forefront on the Belarusian segment of the Internet.

“We need to work more actively on the Internet. Unfortunately, we will definitely fail to pull young people out of phones and computers and make them read newspapers. But in this case, we should offer them something interesting, right and objective on the web,” Lukashenka said.

According to him, state-run media should bar Belarusian citizens from the ‘dirt which coming down on them from World Wide Web’.

“I am asking myself: if not you, then who? You are the persons who make news every day, who are the first to get wind of most events and developments. It is up to you to shape a daily information picture on the Internet. I expect decisive actions in this field from you,” he stressed.

As reported earlier, Belarus Information Minister Alyaksandr Karlyukevich announced key amendments to law On Mass Media at Monday’s ministerial meeting.
