A task to smooth border-related differences with the Russian side has been set by Alyaksandr Lukashenka on Thursday.
A meeting was held to discuss the liberalisation of visa regulations.
According to Lukashenka, Moscow is deeply concerned about Belarus’ actions on the liberalization of visa regulations for foreigners.
“In February 2016, the Belarusian-Russian border gained an unofficial status of ‘the strangest border in Europe’, as it is often called on the Internet and everywhere. And Russia started to exercise the full-fledged passport control in relation to all people travelling by cars, then by planes and railway transport without any formal notice,” the Belarusian leader stressed.
Lukashenka recalled that it took the sides more than 20 years to remove it. In his opinion, re-establishing a true border between the two ‘brotherly states’ is not normal. He blasted the Kremlin’s referring to ‘security reasons’.
“But what security reasons can be involved here if we have common lists foreigners who are prohibited from entering the territory of the Union State. Those who are on these lists cannot enter. Those who are not on the lists can enter until they are not included. Therefore, all explanations that the border is introduced because of what is going on here are groundless,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes Lukashenka.
