Belarusian arrested for white-red white flag launches hunger strike in jail

Football fan Alyaksandr Vyanherski has gone on hunger strike in Barysau predetention centre.

“I am embarking on hunger strike in Barysau district predetention centre on October, 5 due to the fact that I have been sentenced for disobedience to authority (Article 23.4 of the Administrative Code). It is the law enforcement officials who gave different testimonies in court; I had never seen one of them before he appeared in the courtroom. I have never shown any disobedience or contempt towards police officers,” he wrote in a letter to activist Alyaksei Syudak.

Vyanherski also wants to support all political prisoners who are now behind bars.

On September 28, Vyanherski ran out to the field during a BATE-Arsenal footbal match. He was carrying a white-red-white historical flag of Belarusians and the Pahonya emblem. He was detained and delivered to the OMON riot police. In court, the man claimed that the riot policemen put him on his knees and bet him in the kidney area.

On September 29, Alyaksandr Vyanherski was found guilty of petty hooliganism and disobedience to authority’s lawful demands and sentenced to 10 days in prison.
