Criminal case is revenge for firm stand during non-parasite protests – Belarus trade union leader

The leader of the independent trade union REP Henadz Fyadynich, who was arrested yesterday morning by the Department of Financial Investigations, has been released.

A criminal case under Art. 243 of the Criminal Code (large-scale tax evasion) has been opened against Fyadynich. As a suspected person, the trade-union leader signed a non-disclosure agreement, he told Belsat TV.

“They came to my flat, turned it upside down; they even looked intobooks. They took hard drives, some money and a mobile phone away,” he says.

According to the trade union leader, the case initiated against him is nothing but retaliation for their civic activity.

“Obviously, it is a well-orchestrated campaign to take vengeance on us for our activity and firm position during the spring protests against the so-called ‘parasite’ decree. Naturally, they have no evidence, the charge is groundless,” he told our channel.

The case is being carried out by Syarhei Dzmitryeu, an officer of the Department of Financial Investigations.

Natallya Pichuzhkina and Alyaksandr Yarashuk have been released after being questioned.

A criminal case has been also launched against the union accountant Ihar Komlik, who is being kept in a predetention centre now. Fyadynich and Komlik may face up to 7 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property.

As reported earlier, the Minsk and Salihorsk offices of two key opposition trade unions were raided on Wednesday by the Department of Financial Investigations.
