Big Brother to watch Belarusians? Lukashenka set to create nationwide monitoring system

The nationwide public security monitoring system will be established in Belarus, president Alyaksandr Lukashenka said on Monday.

“A draft decree has been submitted to me. It envisages the creation of the public security monitoring system in Belarus. Such systems exist in many countries and have already proved their efficiency. Obviously, the introduction of automated processes for the detection of various threatening events, the analysis of the incoming information will help improve public order,” the presidential press service quotes him as saying.

According to the Belarusian leader, such system should be created under the aegis of a government body, not with the help of a private operator.

Now Belarus has a video surveillance system, a telecommunications network, corresponding equipment, but it is vital the existing system be upgraded to a modern level to yield maximum results, he stressed. Alyksandr Lukashenka ordered his subordinates to cost out the cutting-age system to watch and monitor the Belarusians.

“The recent events show that we do need it,” he said.

Belarus police against Belarusians: Brutal crackdown on peaceful protesters in Minsk (ENG video)

On March 25, the Minsk riot police brutally dispersed the protest against the so-called tax on ‘spongers’ introduced by president Alyaksandr Lukashenka in 2015. Hundreds of people – even women, elderly people, journalists and ordinary passers-by – were arrested, battered and jailed. It is noteworthy that the protesters also planned a peaceful celebration of Freedom Day. It is an unofficial holiday commemorating the establishment of the first Belarusian nation-state, the Belarusian People’s Republic, on March 25, 1918. On Sunday, Belarusians came to Kastrychnitskaya Square to show solidarity with detained and beaten.
