‘Stop pressurizing Belarusians!’ Vitsebsk protests against ‘parasite’ law

Over 1,500 Vitsebsk residents took to the streets to protest the so-called decree on idlers on Sunday.

Decree Nr 3 signed by president Lukashenka in April, 2015 established the obligation of the citizens of Belarus, foreign citizens permanently residing in Belarus, stateless persons, who did not participate in the financing of public spending or participated in such financing less than 183 days (six months – ed.) in the past year, to pay a fee of 20 basic units (appr. $230).

On February 17 -19, protests were held in six Belarusian cities. The most sizable action took place in Homiel where 3,000 – 4,000 persons gathered.

After the rally, the Vitsebsk police detained activist Tatsyana Sevyarynets.

In a brief telephone conversation with Belsat TV, the woman said that a protocol was drawn upon her for alleged violation of Article 23.34 of the Administrative Code (‘violation of the order of organizing or holding mass events’). Tatsyana Sevyarynets would be summoned to court. She was not the organizer of the protests, the woman stressed.
