Russia's Defense Ministry confirms Turkey's downing SU-24 warplane (UPD)

A warplane of ‘unknown nationality’ crashed Tuesday on the Turkish-Syrian border, cnn.com reported today with reference to Turkey’s semi-official Anadolu Agency.

The warplane shot down by Turkey near the Syrian border on Tuesday was a Russian-made SU-24, Turkish presidential sources said, adding it was downed in line with Turkey’s rules of engagement after violating Ankara’s airspace. Turkish F16s warned the jet over the airspace violations before shooting it down, the military official told Reuters.

Footage from private broadcaster Haberturk TV showed a warplane going down in flames in a woodland area, a long plume of smoke trailing behind it. The plane went down in area known by Turks as ‘Turkmen Mountain’ in northern Syria near the Turkish border, Haberturk said.

The Turkish government is strongly opposed to the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad. Skirmishes between Turkish and Syrians have taken place in the past, with Turkish officials accusing the Syrian planes of violating Turkish air space.

Russia, however, has been supporting the Assad regime, and has had warplanes active over Syria.

Russia’s defense ministry confirms the downed fighter jet was Russian, but states it did not violate Turkish airspace, RIA news agency reports. According to the Ministry, pilots of the downed SU-24 jet have been parachuted out.

“A probe is in progress into the circumstances of the Russian plane’s crash. The Defense Ministry says the plane invariably stayed within Syrian airspace. Objective monitoring data confirm this,” TASS quotes the Defense Ministry.

NATO has published a map of the route of the Russian warplane that violated Turkey’s airspace on Tuesday. The map shows that Russian pilots might have been too lazy to flight around Turkish – or they did it intentionally:
