Lithuanian Ambassador refused to come to Astravets NPP construction site

Evaldas Ignatavičius explained his refusal by saying that security experts should evaluate the situation, not diplomats.

“I was invited to come and see the construction site after the resumption of work, but I declined the offer, because this is, in my opinion, should be done by experts,” BNs agency quoted Ignatavičius. He stressed that the implementation of nuclear safety standards should be provided by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is to hold on the NPP the so-called nuclear stress tests.

Last week, Deputy Energy Minister of Belarus Vadzim Zakreuski confirmed the information published on belsat.eu, that at the beginning of April, at the NPP occured an incident (the collapse of the NPP maintenance building stand). At first, the Belarusian side denied this information.

Lithuania is the main critic of the idea of the Belarusian nuclear power plant, which is only 20 km from the border and 50 km from Vilnius. Minsk rejects Lthuania’s claims, arguing that nuclear power plants will have high safety standards.
