In wake of Freedom Day: Several detainees still in prison

In total, the police detained 15 persons who were about to celebrate the Freedom Day in Minsk on March, 25, the human rights centre Viasna reports.

The detentions took place on Monday evening at the intersection of two streets in downtown Minsk, on Kastrychnitskaya Square, as well as in Kurapaty. Some of the detainees were released at about 21.00, in particular, musicians Lyavon Volski, Zmitser Waytsyushkevich, Ihar Varashkevich, Pavel Arakelyan, activists and politicians Syarhei Vasilkou, Mikalai Kazlou, Vital Rymasheuski, Yury Paleyka. The policemen drew protocols upon them.

But at least three activists spent the night behind bars: Alena Talstaya, who chained herself to a post on Kastrychnitskaya Square, as well as Dzyanis Urbanovich and Valery Ryabtseu, who were detained in Kurapaty, a Stalin-era mass grave site near Minsk. According to human rights defenders, Talstaya went on hunger strike.

Activists Zmitser Dashkevich and Natallya Harachka-Basalyha still remain in the remand prison (they were detained during Sunday’s concert).
