MFA outraged at Russia envoy’s interview: Belarus is no federal district

The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is outspokenly critical of the recent statements by Russian Ambassador to Belarus Mikhail Babich.

As reported earlier, in an interview to to the RIA Novosti news agency, the diplomat took the liberty to slam Belarus for ‘creating the enemy image’ as part of an election technology aimed at ‘mobilizing voters’. At the same time, according to him, Russia is ready to be a guarantor of the sovereignty of Belarus.

“It seems to me that everyone has been wondering for long who is encroaching upon the sovereignty of Belarus and from whom one is going to protect it? If it is a threat from the West, similarly to the well-known coloured revolutions and coups, the Russian Federation, as an ally, will be upholding the sovereignty together with Belarus by all available means,” the Russian official promised.

He also reproached Belarus of being unfriendly to its main partner.

When reached by Belarusian state-run news agency BelTA, Anatol Glaz, Spokesman for the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, admitted his not reading all the interviews granted by Mikhail Babich. However, in his opinion, the Russian diplomat’s ‘patronizing style’ never changing much.

“Therefore, without reading into detail, I can say that the relations between our countries and peoples are much deeper and more comprehensive than an artificial, manufactured set of numbers which the Russian diplomat regularly cites. But it is up to him to set the bar that turns him into an accounts clerk or a promising accountant,” BelTA quotes Anatol Glaz.

The Belarusian top official recommended Mikhail Babich to study history and ‘show a little respect’.

“In my opinion, for his short time in Belarus, he simply has not understood the difference between a federal district and an independent state. I think our partners will be given detailed responses to the statements made by Mr Ambassador soon,” Mr Glaz added.
