Zapad-2017 echo: Opposition activist to spend 15 days in jail for protest rally

Yauhen Afnahel, a coordinator of the civil campaign European Belarus and one of the leaders of the Belarusian National Congress, has been detained in Minsk.

The Minsk police contacted his family and said that Afnahel would spend 15 days under arrest in the predetention centre for participation in the protest rally in Kastrychnitskaya Square on September 8.

On September 8, Mikalai Statkevich, one of the leaders of the Belarusian National Congress, led the protest against the Belarusian-Russian military exercise ‘Zapad-2017’ in Minsk.

The opposition warned against ‘occupation from the inside’ as well as ‘external aggression’ and adopted a resolution slamming Belarus’ hosting Zapad-2017.

No one was detained during the rally, but later poet and politician Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu spent 7 days in prison for participating. Mikalai Statkevich was also put in jail. Mahiliou-based activist Stanislau Pavlinkovich was BYN 460 fined.
