Every 20th Belarusian below poverty line


The recent data provided by Belarus’ National Statistics Committee show that the number of the poor in the country has increased.

In H1 2016, there have been more low income families – 5.5% comparing 5% in 2015. These families live below a minimum subsistence income (169.9 Belarusian rubles).

The number of the indigent poor has grown up in all regions; Brest region tops the list while Minsk completes it.

Almost every second citizen of the country (48.5% of its population) live on less than BYN 200 per month. As of July 1, there are 9.5 mln residents in Belarus. Thus, around 4.6 mln persons get by with such amount of money.

According to the World Bank, incomes below $ 1.9 per day (less than $ 50 per month) indicate crossing the poverty line.
