State insurance company to pay for restoration of monument to Belarusian-born Maidan defender

The representative of the state insurance company visited the grave of the Belarusian hero of the ‘Heavenly Hundred’ in the village of Stsyah Pratsy near Homiel. He was called by the father of Mikhail to assess the damage inflicted by unknown vandals to the monument at the grave of his son. The monument had been insured.

“The insurer promised to repay all the losses for the damage restoration. The left half of the monument is to be dismantled, transported to grinding, and then again to be returned to its original place. All this will cost the insurance company some good money, as we insured the monument on the day of installation,” Nina Zhizneuskaya told Radio Liberty.

The first person to notice that the monument had been desecrated by the unknown was the Homiel journalist Natallya Kryvashey. She takes care of the grave. The monument had the word ‘traitor’ scratched on it. Natalia did not want to disturb the parents of Mikhail and directly addressed the local police – she wrote a complaint.

Mikhail Zhyzneuski was shot in the heart and killed in January 2014 during the events on Kyiv Maidan. Ukraine’s President awarded the Order of Hero of the Heavenly Hundred to the Belarusian posthumously. The award was personally taken by the parents from the hands of Petro Poroshenko.

Money for the monument to the hero was collected, as they say, by the whole world. Entrepreneurs, workers and pensioners all donated money for the monument. Funds came from Belarus, the United States, Australia and many other countries. It was put up a year ago, in early July. Since then, the grave has been tended to by parents of Mikhail and local volunteers.
