Thorn Birds in Belarus style: Girl harassing Catholic priest faces trial

Lida District Court found a local girl guilty of disseminating false information on the Internet about a Roman Catholic priest whom she fell in love with. The defendant’s real name and age are held confidential.

The girl will have to serve a term of two years in an open-type correctional facility, the newspaper Lidskaya Gazeta reports.

“Many women fly to priests for support – and get it, it is no surprise. After all, a father confessor always helps to sort out contradictory thoughts and situations, sets people on the right path. In this story, a young girl (let’s call her Volha), not only ignored all the canons of priest-parishioner relations, but also committed a crime by forcing love on him,” Dzyanis Korda, Lida district deputy prosecutor, wrote in his article for the local publication.

According to him, Volha was born and raised in Lida. In summer she always visited her grandmother in the village. There she met a ‘nice guy’ and fell in love.

“After finishing school, the young man started to study for the priesthood, and later he was sent to serve in one of Roman Catholic churches in Lida. Volha happened to be a parishioner of this church. Emotions woke up; she began to use every opportunity to talk to the priest and soon made a declaration of love to him,” Korda said.

The young priest tried to explain that they would never be together because a Catholic priest cannot marry and have children and stressed that he never had any romantic feelings towards her.

When the priest was transferred to a neighboring district, Volha found out where he lived, broke a window and got into the house. After the girl poured nail polish remover on the hood of his personal car, the lid came off and the priest called the police. A criminal case was opened. Lida district court sentenced Volha to 240 hours of community service.

But the unreqiited love did not wither away. The girl created an account on odnoklassniki social network and gave it the priest’s name and surname. She added about fifty acquaintances of him as friends and posted random pictures of kids on the page [hinting that they are his children – belsat.eu].

As a result, ‘Volha’, who failed to hear wedding bells, appeared in court.
