Yarmoshyna: opposition members in election commissions could cause conflict

A large number of opposition representatives in election commissions can lead to conflicts, said the chairwoman of the Central Election Commission of Belarus, Lidziya Yarmoshyna. She stated this in an interview with the Sunday program “Contours” at the ONT, interfax.by reports.

“Half of the participants (in election commissions – Ed.) from the opposition is impossible: the opposition dies not have enough staff. Unfortunately, our local executive authorities do not seek to fulfill the requests of the opposition. But I understand them, because most of those who claim to take these places are usually outrageous urban representatives, who are constantly in conflict with the authorities,” said Yarmoshyna.

She added that these people “are well-known in local executive bodies” and have not yet won the sympathy of the local authorities.

According to Ms Yarmoshyna, executive committees “did not want to create a fire that smolders constantly, and even a fire that will put pressure on all the other members of the commission, who are normal tolerant people.”

At the same time, said the head of the Central Election Commission, among the opposition there are tolerant intelligent people who do not start conflicts for the sake of them. “These people are included in the commissions, but the percentage that suits the authorities does not satisfy the opposition,” she said.

“To have the election commissions at the mercy of the people responsible for nothing and who benefit from the scandal and the fire will be short-sighted, because it would jeopardize the organization of the election campaign,” summed up Ms Yarmoshyna.

The presidential election campaign may be launched on June 30, as the CEC proposes to hold presidential elections on October 11. Previously, the proposed election day was November 15, 2015.
