Winner of Giedroyc literary prize named


Viktar Kazko has been awarded with the most prestigious literary prize.

Six books were shortlisted for the literary prize. Among the nominees:

1. Tatstsiana Barysik, “Women and the leopard” (Minsk, Knigazbor)

2. Alhyerd Baharevich, “Children of Alindarki” (Minsk, Haliyafy)

3. Anton Frantsishak Bryl, “Yan Yalmuzhna” (Minsk, Knigazbor)

4. Andrei Hutsau, “The Book of Ghosts” (Minsk, Knigazbor)

5. Syarhei Dubavets “Blue ship sails in the blue sea” (Minsk, Kaucheg)

6. Viktar Kazko “Time to gather the bones” (Minsk, Knigazbor)

Contestant, who was awarded first prize by the jury will receive a check from IdeaBank – partner of the Award. The second contestant award received from organizers a promise of his work translated into Polish or a scholarship in the House of Writers in the Swedish city of Visby. The third place winner will receive a scholarship for creative trip to the Latvian Ventspils, BelaPAN reports.

 This year the competition received 63 literary works, from which the jury selected 42 pieces that entered the full list of the competetion.

This year’s jury consisted of philosophers Uladzimir Arlou and Ihar Babkou, translator Malgorzata Buhalik and Hanna Yankuta, literary historians Hanna Kislitsyna and Tsikhan Charnyakevich, writer and artist Adam Hlobus, writer Andrey Fedarenka.

The Jerzy Giedroyc Literary Prize was founded on December 28, 2011. It is awarded for the best book of prose, published (in paper or electronic form) in the past year in the Belarusian language in the genres of fiction and essays. The founders were the Polish Embassy in Belarus, the Polish Institute in Minsk, the Belarusian PEN Centre and the Union of Belarusian Writers.

In 2012, the winner of the award was Pavel Kastsyukevich with a book “The team of Belarus on non-principal sports” in 2013 – Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu with the book “Machine with and without soda pop” in 2014 – Ihar Babkou with a book “Minute Three Stories.”
