Why in Belarus? Giant graffiti to appear in Minsk on occasion of Russia Day

A sketch of the giant graffiti is seen on the wall of the 12-storey block of flats in Mahiliouskaya Street in Minsk. According to the authors, there will be a picture of a Belarusian boy and a Russian girl.

The Minsk city executive committee sanctioned the creation of the graffiti on the threshold of Russia Day which is celebrated on June, 12.

According to Belarusian graffiti artists, the project hardly has anything in common with street art or graffiti culture. It will result in a paid-for monumental painting in the worst Soviet traditions, they believe.

It is to be recalled that in January the country’s court fined three young men who drew a graffiti saying ‘Belarus must be Belarusian’ and depicting national ornament and crossed signs of the sickle with a hammer and swastika:
