War on ‘social parasites’: Nearly 100,000 registered as jobless

The Belarusian Ministry of Labor and Social Protection has made a report on the labor market.

In the first half of 2015, over 136,000 persons who are seeking work have resorted to Belarusian centers of employment and social protection. 99,100 of them have been registered as jobless people. However, on July 1, only 46,800 unemployed were oficially listed as idle labourers, state-run news agency BelTA reports with reference to the Ministry.

At the moment the Belarusian labor market is marked by a decrease in labor demand, an increased number of appeals to state bodies for assistance in finding a job and a surge in registered unemployment, the news agency says.

On July 1, there were 1.7 unemployed persons for one vacancy; a year ago, the proportion was equal to 0.4.

Meanwhile, the number of vacancies is being decreased. On July 1, employment centers had only 27,600 jobs  – two times less than in the summer of 2014.
