Visa regime agreement between Belarus and Russia possible already in 2018

The two neighbors are to sign an agreement on mutual recognition of visas by the end of the year.

According to the press service of the Union State Permanent Committee, the draft document was adopted at a meeting of Union State Council of Ministers in St. Petersburg on June 16. The signing was in the 2017-2020 Action Plan on the formation of the single migration space of the Union State.

The report stresses that “this will remove the problem of crossing the Russian-Belarusian border by citizens of third countries, which escalated in recent years”.

The two sides will also discuss the possibility of a single Union State visa.

On June 9, Russian Ambassador Alexander Surikov said that ISIS can get across the border with Belarus. It was the threat of international terrorism that he used to explain the strengthening of control measures at the Russian-Belarusian border.

Surikov noted that it is not an issue of confidence in the Belarusian border guards, but rather the need for additional measures.
