Victory Day in occupied Donetsk (video)

Anti-aircraft weapon systems, artillery pieces and military machines, including tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, were involved in today’s Victory parade in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk occupied by Russia-backed separatists.

Russia, Belarus and many other former Soviet republics commemorate Victory Day on May 9. Most European countries celebrate the victory over Nazi Germany on May 8 remembering the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces.

According to local media reports, about 30,000 people gathered in downtown Donetsk. The participants were marching along the streets carrying the symbols of the Soviet Union and the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic.

Vladimir Kononov, the defense minister of the self-proclaimed republic, reviewed the parade.
