Vandal who wanted to steal bronze statue of Kastsiushka sentenced in US


The vandal who wanted to steal the Kastsiushka monument in Indiana, has been sentenced to six months in prison.



The news that someone had stolen the monument, that appeared in September last year, shocked residents of the 30-thousand city East Chicago. The perpetrators were found, and one of them was tried. In turn, the bronze statue was restored.

The 34-year-old Israel L.Soberens, who admitted that he had tried to saw the monument in order to sell it for metal, got six months in prison. Some people were not happy about the ‘light’ sentence, but the prosecutor said that under the agreement with the convict he would be deported from the United States.

The disappearance of the monument to Tadeussh Kastsiushka in September was first noticed by two students. The incident angered the residents.

“It’s crazy, all these years the monument has been here, every day I passed him,” said one of the city dwellers.

The monument appeared in a local park in 1934. Shortly after its disappearance, the city authorities assured the public that the monument would be restored, and if it is impossible – it would be made from scratch.

Indeed, it appeared at its usual place on Monday 29 February. Local TV Ectv Indiana posted a photo of the monument. Very soon General Kastsiushka will be officially presented to the public.
